AI-edited module sheet. Based on the TUMonline module description, edited for readability.Original in TUMonline

What it is about

You will learn how chemical and thermal processes are modeled and controlled. The module provides fundamentals on mass-balance models (mass, amount of substance, energy, momentum), on stationary and dynamic behavior, and on control engineering (P, I, D, PID, cascades). In the end you can mathematically describe systems, numerically solve ODEs, and design and analyze control loops with MATLAB/Simulink — taking ecological and economic impacts into account.

What you will be able to do

  • Identify steady-state and dynamic behavior of controlled systems
  • Understand differences and effects of P, I, and D controllers
  • Apply control rules for PID tuning
  • Analyze stationary characteristic curves of controlled systems
  • Derive and numerically solve ODEs to describe dynamic systems
  • Create systematic solutions for control tasks with MATLAB/Simulink
  • Consider ecological and economic impacts of solutions
  • Practice technical discussion and collaboration in interdisciplinary teams

What the module consists of

  • VorlesungDelivery of theoretical fundamentals (PowerPoint, concepts of modelling and control)
  • TutoriumDeepening through exercises and solution patterns to consolidate the material
  • Seminar / ProjektübungenAutonomous work on problems in MATLAB/Simulink, application of lecture and exercise content

Teaching method

  • Präsentation (PowerPoint)Explain the theoretical foundations
  • Software-Demonstrationen (MATLAB/Simulink)Practical application of modelling and control
  • Tutorium mit ÜbungsaufgabenDeepening and consolidation of solution strategies
  • Seminar/ProjektarbeitIndependent solving of real-world problems and teamwork
