What it is about

In this laboratory internship you deepen experimental methods for the electrical and thermal characterization of energy storage, mainly batteries. In the end you will be able to measure standard key figures, practically test battery systems, create simple models and scientifically evaluate measurement results.

What you will be able to do

  • Apply thermal and electrical characterization of energy storage
  • Measure capacity, energy content, performance and efficiency
  • Conduct check-up tests on Li‑Ion, NiMH and lead batteries
  • Conduct temperature tests with climate chambers
  • Experimentally investigate dynamic stresses and current profiles
  • Apply electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS)
  • Operate battery test equipment from BaSyTec and Biologic
  • Model stationary energy storage (system simulation)
  • Produce and characterize button cells in half-cell and full-cell configurations
  • Know safety aspects of lithium‑ion batteries (excursion)

What the module consists of

  • PraktikumConducting eight experiments on experimental methods for energy storage; block course in small groups
  • ExkursionSafety tests on lithium‑ion batteries (as part of the experimental program)

Teaching method

  • Blockpraktikum in KleingruppenConveying common measurement methods through independent experimentation in groups of three
  • Selbststudium zur VersuchsvorbereitungPreparation of the experiments in the group
  • Betreute praktische DurchführungSupervisor checks understanding at the beginning, accompanies the experimental work and intervenes if needed
  • Einführungsveranstaltung (Präsentation)Introduction to task, equipment and theoretical methods
  • Individuelle Diskussionen mit BetreuernDeepening and clarification during the experimental work
