EI7473Master's Modules5 ECTSGerman/Englishsummer semesterDepartment Electrical Engineering
AI-edited module sheet. Based on the TUMonline module description, edited for readability.Original in TUMonline

What it is about

You will learn fundamental concepts and applications of microfluidic and microelectromechanical systems (BioMEMS) for biological questions. The module combines electrodynamics, surface science and fluid mechanics, shows principles of lab-on-a-chip systems and covers cell-based microfluidic systems as well as chip-based neuroscience applications. In the end you will be able to explain physical mechanisms and assess their application in BioMEMS and microfluidics.

What you will be able to do

  • Compare models of the electrode–electrolyte interface
  • Explain the weaknesses of various interfacial models
  • Present physical concepts for particle and drop actuation on chips
  • Understand mechanisms of electrical and electrochemical cell-chip interfaces
  • Describe verbally and in writing methods for structuring neural networks

What the module consists of

  • Lecture (2 SWS)Introduction to BioMEMS and microfluidics concepts
  • Exercise (2 SWS)Solving and discussing problem sets to deepen and apply the lecture content

Teaching method

  • LectureConveying the fundamental concepts and theory
  • Weekly exercisesIndividual monitoring of learning progress and application of the material
  • Exercises/DiscussionJoint solving of related problems for deepening and transfer
