What it is about

In this module you will learn power electronics and drive technology used in modern electric vehicles. You will understand energy conversion, torque generation in electrical machines, and the control of drives and charging infrastructure, and you will be able to compare the relevant converter topologies and their operating modes.

What you will be able to do

  • Understand energy conversion and torque process of electrical machines
  • Name the differences to internal combustion engines
  • Explain the physics of regenerative braking
  • Describe transient and static processes with the basic wave model
  • Interpret simulation results
  • Understand the operating principle of field-oriented control
  • Know the requirements for control methods for vehicle drives
  • Trace the energy flow from the grid to the battery
  • Compare power electronic concepts in vehicle functions
  • Understand operation of AC-DC and DC-AC converters as grid interfaces
  • Understand operation and goals of DC-DC converters for charging/discharging batteries
  • Understand voltage balancing circuits and their operation
  • Know the differences between offboard and onboard charging devices
  • Understand modulation and control of converters in the vehicle context
  • Continuously reflect on and contextually incorporate sustainability aspects

What the module consists of

  • Vorlesung (3 SWS)Delivering the content through lectures, discussions, presentations, demonstrations and writing on the board
  • Übung (1 SWS)Interactive processing, discussion and calculation of exercise content

Teaching method

  • Vorlesung mit Präsentation und DiskussionExplanation of technical content and exchange in plenary
