What it is about

You gain an overview of numerical methods for solving heat and thermofluid dynamics problems and learn good programming practices in Matlab. By the end of the course you will be able to analyze physical and mathematical properties of the relevant partial differential equations and to implement appropriate numerical algorithms to solve typical heat transfer problems.

What you will be able to do

  • Understanding the structure of PDEs of heat transfer
  • Analyzing physical, mathematical and numerical properties of heat problems
  • Implementation of numerical procedures in Matlab
  • Applying finite-difference, finite-volume and finite-element methods
  • Using iterative solvers (Gauss-Seidel, SOR) for large linear systems
  • Handling transient problems (explicit/implicit schemes, Runge-Kutta, CFL)
  • Utilizing Green's functions and numerical integration
  • Solving nonlinear systems (Newton-Raphson) and carrying out simple optimization tasks

What the module consists of

  • Praktische Sitzungen im RechnerraumProgramming Matlab algorithms in pairs to solve given tasks
  • Kurze Vorlesungen zu SitzungsbeginnIntroduction of physical phenomena and the numerical algorithms to be used
  • EinzelprojekteIndividual project work in the last third of the semester
  • Optionale WorkshopsTeam workshop and presentation coaching (offered by the ZSK)

Teaching method

  • Team- and individual workpractical implementation and deepening of the contents
  • Student presentationsCommunication and presentation of one's own results
  • LecturesIntroduction to physical and numerical fundamentals
