AI-edited module sheet. Based on the TUMonline module description, edited for readability.Original in TUMonline

What it is about

You will learn the Lattice-Boltzmann Method (LBM) as an alternative to classical CFD methods: how the method is derived from kinetic models, how streaming and collision steps work, and which advantages LBM offers for complex geometries, microscopic interactions, and parallelization. In the end you will be able to theoretically classify, implement, and apply the method to selected model problems from science and engineering.

What you will be able to do

  • Understanding the derivation and mathematical analysis of the Lattice-Boltzmann Method
  • Application of the LBM to different model problems (e.g. external forces, porous media, heat or pollutant transport, simple blood flow models)
  • Implementation and programming of LBM algorithms in programming exercises
  • Knowledge of current developments (e.g. cumulant-based LBM) and available software

What the module consists of

  • LectureConveying the theoretical foundations, examples and discussions
  • Übung/Practice Sessionsjoint solving of exercises for deepening and self-check; solutions are provided
  • Programming/Tutorialspractical implementation of case studies and applications to see algorithms in action

Teaching method

  • LecturePresentation of the content with examples and discussions for motivation and self-study
  • Exercise SessionsWorking on and discussing tasks to deepen and verify understanding
  • Programming Teams/Sessionspractical implementation and testing of LBM algorithms in case studies
