Erdsystemmodellierung

What it is about

You deepen your methods of Earth system modelling and learn how the atmosphere, oceans, biosphere and cryosphere are simulated together. You acquire the ability to develop simple to complex climate and Earth system models, to understand nonlinear feedbacks, and to validate models with observational data. In the end you can select suitable Earth system models for specific questions and critically evaluate their results.

What you will be able to do

• Capture mathematical basics of Earth system modelling and relevant physical fundamental equations
• Demonstrate availability and use of measurement data for validating model simulations
• Apply numerical methods and assess their accuracy and stability
• Demonstrate understanding from simple energy-balance models to fully coupled 3D Earth system models
• Apply concepts of sensitivity, feedbacks, equilibria as well as nonlinear and abrupt behaviour
• Select suitable Earth system models for specific research questions
