AI-edited module sheet. Based on the TUMonline module description, edited for readability.Original in TUMonline

What it is about

You will learn methods of variational calculus, both indirect and direct approaches for scalar and vector-valued problems. This includes relaxation theory and Gamma-convergence as well as their application to model problems of nonlinear continuum mechanics. In the end you can apply direct and indirect methods and investigate various linear and nonlinear optimization problems.

What you will be able to do

  • Apply direct methods of variational calculus
  • Apply indirect methods of variational calculus
  • Understand relaxation theory
  • Understand Gamma-convergence
  • Apply the methods to model problems of nonlinear continuum mechanics
  • Investigate linear and nonlinear optimization problems

What the module consists of

  • VorlesungConveying the content in lectures with demonstrative examples and discussion for active engagement
  • Übung/Practice sessionsDeepening in the form of problem sets, solutions and supervised or increasingly autonomous sessions

Teaching method

  • Vortragsweise mit Beispielen und Diskussionpresents content, encourages own analysis and literature work
  • Betreute und später selbstständige Übungssitzungenenable deepening, practice on exercises and self-check of learning progress
