What it is about

You will learn the fundamentals of compressible flow theory: from the compressible Navier–Stokes equations and thermodynamic principles through stationary flow line theory and shock relations to linear and nonlinear wave dynamics. In the end you will be able to treat stationary and unsteady gas-dynamic problems in sub- and supersonic regimes with analytical methods and to estimate simple multidimensional effects in supersonic flows.

What you will be able to do

  • Formulation of sensible simplifications in compressible flow theory and thermodynamics
  • Analysis of stationary and unsteady gas-dynamic problems with analytical methods
  • Qualitative assessment of supersonic flows around slender bodies using linear differential equations
  • Understanding wave dynamic processes including unsteady shock formation
  • Understanding experimental apparatuses for investigating compressible flows
  • Application of the learned theories to technical questions (e.g. wave resistance, unsteady behavior in piston–cylinder systems)

What the module consists of

  • VorlesungIntroduction of the theoretical foundations of gas dynamics
  • ÜbungComputation and discussion of sample problems for deepening and application

Teaching method

  • Multimedial gestützter FrontalunterrichtExplanation of the theoretical foundations
  • ÜbungsbegleitungApplication and discussion of example problems to consolidate the contents
  • Simulationen und Visualisierungen von ExperimentenSupplementation of lecture and exercise with illustrative examples
