What it is about

You will learn basic and advanced techniques of image processing and image reconstruction with a focus on applications in physics. In the end you will be able to apply filter- and Fourier-based methods, interpolation, segmentation, noise and resolution analysis, tomographic reconstruction as well as fundamental concepts of wave propagation and phase-contrast imaging, and assess their respective strengths and limitations.

What you will be able to do

• Apply basic image processing and analysis methods (spatial and in Fourier space)
• Understand and practically use interpolation and pixel representation
• Perform noise and resolution analysis
• Apply segmentation methods
• Tomographic reconstruction from 2D projections
• Apply fundamentals of wave propagation and phase-contrast imaging
• Recognize advantages and disadvantages of specific imaging techniques
• Identify suitable imaging methods for concrete (biomedical) questions

What the module consists of

• VorlesungIntroduction of and explanation of the methods; linking recurring concepts such as Fourier analysis, linear algebra and optimization
• ÜbungApplication of the presented methods in short programming tasks (usually Python, <10 lines of code) and quizzes for reinforcement
