What it is about
You will learn the experimental and theoretical foundations of the strong interaction (QCD) in the context of accelerator experiments. In the end you will understand how hadron production and jets arise in e+e-, ep- and pp/p anti-p scattering, how to apply event shapes and jet algorithms, and how QCD coupling constants and fragmentation models are determined experimentally.
What you will be able to do
- Understand the dependence of strong interaction processes on the energy scale
- Understand experimental methods based on QCD
- Application of jet and event-shape algorithms for classifying hadronic final states
- Understand methods for determining the coupling constant in QCD
- Understand applications of fragmentation models for particles in jets
What the module consists of
- VorlesungDelivery of the theoretical and experimental foundations as well as discussion of current measurements
- ÜbungDeepening of the material through exercises, detailed calculations and exam preparation
Teaching method
- Vorlesung mit Fragen und Diskussionto make experimental aspects and the methodology for testing theoretical assumptions transparent
- Begleitende Übungen mit ausführlicher Aufgabendiskussionto deepen understanding and practice independent handling of the course material
