Food Economics

What it is about

You will learn economic questions around food markets and value chains. The module covers market trends, characteristics of supply and demand, food safety, labeling, consumption, nutrition and policy measures and makes you familiar with the economic models used to analyze these topics.

What you will be able to do

Outline important trends and phenomena in food markets in Germany, Europe and worldwide
Analyze consumer and firm behavior in food markets with economic theory
Evaluate the effectiveness of food-related policy instruments
Read, discuss and critically assess scientific literature in Food Economics

What the module consists of

LectureConveying basics about markets, trends and economic concepts
Literature work with presentationIndependent reading of scientific articles, 15-minute presentation and about 2-page report per semester
DiscussionCritical engagement with assumptions, methods and implications of the research in the course

Teaching method

Interactive lectureLecturers and students contribute to the discussion and build a common foundation
Journal Club / Article presentationStudents prepare articles, present and discuss assumptions, methods and results
