What it is about
You will learn the quantum mechanical foundations and experimental aspects of particle oscillations, starting with neutral mesons and CP violation up to neutrino oscillations in two and three flavours. In the end you will be able to apply formalisms such as PMNS/CKM, assess differences between meson and neutrino oscillations, and classify experimental detection methods as well as open questions.
What you will be able to do
- Understand quantum mechanical descriptions of particle oscillations
- Assess similarities and differences between meson and neutrino oscillations
- Classify experimental methods for detecting neutrino oscillations
- Apply coherence conditions, wave packets and matter effects (e.g. MSW)
- Discuss relevant open questions (mass hierarchy, CP violation, sterile neutrinos, leptogenesis)
- Transfer knowledge to project work or MSc theses in the field
What the module consists of
- VorlesungPresentation of thematically structured content with cross-references; involvement of students in scientific discussions
- ÜbungDeepening through problem examples and calculation tasks; detailed discussion of key experiments and techniques
Teaching method
- Vorlesung mit Tafel- und PPTX‑InhaltenDelivery of the learning content and derivation of important connections
- ProblemlösungsübungenPractice and application of learned material with calculation examples and historical experiments
- Wissenschaftliche DiskussionenPromotion of analytical-physical thinking and interpretation of open questions
