What it is about

You will learn how nonlinear and abrupt behavior in the Earth system is described and analyzed. You will receive methodological foundations for mathematical modeling of nonlinear dynamics and will become familiar with typical multistable components of the Earth system as well as their interactions.

What you will be able to do

  • Replicate fundamentals of nonlinear processes in the Earth system
  • Name examples of nonlinear behavior in parts of the Earth system
  • distinguish critical/abrupt behavior from other nonlinear processes
  • critically evaluate modeling approaches for nonlinear and critical/abrupt behavior

What the module consists of

  • SeminarStudents give lectures, discuss literature and deepen topics in project work

Teaching method

  • Studierendenvorträge und Diskussionenables critical engagement with review and research articles
  • Vorstellung und Diskussion von Review-Papersintroduces the topic and creates a common knowledge base
  • Präsentation und Bewertung wissenschaftlicher Publikationendeepens understanding and trains critical evaluation of methods and results
  • Digitale Lehrveranstaltungenables participation and exchange even in digital form
