What it is about

You will learn how Earth cover components and their interactions are represented and coupled in modern Earth system models. You will also learn how satellite hydrogeodesy (in particular radar altimetry and other space-based techniques) is used to observe continental water bodies and to calibrate hydrological models. In the end you will be able to critically evaluate models and observations and derive water levels, sea volumes and discharge from altimetry data.

What you will be able to do

  • Describe the construction and representation of Earth system components in modern models
  • Explain approaches for coupling model components
  • Critically reflect uncertainties in Earth system modeling
  • Discuss the scientific state on possible Earth system tipping points
  • Understand measurement principles of radar altimetry and their hydrological potential
  • Apply altimetry data to estimate sea volumes and river discharge
  • Evaluate the quality of inland altimetry data
  • Use satellite data for calibration/assimilation of hydrological models

What the module consists of

  • Vorlesung HydrogeodesyIntroduction to altimetric and other hydrogeodetic observation methods; includes four supervised hands-on sessions in the CIP-Pool and two guest lectures
  • Seminar Advanced Earth System ModellingStudent presentations and discussions on seminal papers about advanced modeling aspects

Teaching method

  • Interactive lecture and seminarContinuous assessment of learning progress through questions and discussions
  • Mathematical derivations on the blackboardFor transparent conveyance of the underlying formulas and concepts
  • Discussion of selected literatureDeepening understanding and critical engagement with research results
  • Supervised practical exercises (CIP-Pool)Application of altimetry data: calculation of water levels, discharges and sea volumes
