What it is about

The module introduces qualitative methods of Science and Technology Studies (STS). You will learn various methods of data collection and analysis (e.g., interviews, participant observation, coding, iconography) as well as overarching approaches such as Grounded Theory, discourse analysis and ethnography. In the end you will be able to develop research questions, select appropriate methods, collect and analyze data, and design research designs for STS projects.

What you will be able to do

• Familiarity with various qualitative STS methods
• Apply and evaluate interviews, participant observation and document/image analyses
• Knowledge of methodological approaches from philosophy (e.g., hermeneutic, phenomenological, dialectical)
• Knowledge of historical methods (e.g., historical-critical, oral history, techno-historical object analysis)
• Selection of suitable methods for research questions and development of research designs
