Advanced Topic: Biomedicine & Health

What it is about

You engage with advanced questions in Science & Technology Studies (STS) on biomedicine and health. You will learn how concepts of ‘body’, ‘health’, ‘illness’ and ‘self’ shift through biomedicine innovations and how these changes have social, political and ethical consequences. In the end you will be able to critically reflect on relevant lines of research and develop your own small research questions and projects on the topic.

What you will be able to do

• Understand advanced theories and concepts in research on biomedicine and society and apply them to small research projects
• Critically discuss concepts such as ‘body’, ‘health’, ‘illness’ and ‘self’
• Analyze possibilities and effects of biomedicine technologies (e.g., genetics, stem cell research, neurobiology, epigenetics)
• Evaluate and reflect on social, political and ethical questions of new biomedical findings and technologies
• Develop a relevant research question and apply it in a small research project
