Nachhaltigkeit in Architektur, Stadt und Landschaft

What it is about

You learn the relationships between design concepts in architecture, urban and landscape planning and the associated energy, material and traffic flows. In the end you can assess the effects of planning and design decisions on urban space and quality of life as well as on resource consumption and evaluate sustainable courses of action.

What you will be able to do

Analyze general sustainability criteria (e.g., urban density, urban structure)
Understand sector-spanning spatial, material, cultural and societal aspects
Methodical analysis of case studies and evaluation of planning decisions
Quantification and interpretation of system interdependencies
Assessment of mobility issues (private transport, public transport, alternative concepts)
Assessment of urban planning aspects (functional separation/mixing) and the effect of green spaces
Understanding sustainable strategies for dealing with building fabric, expansion and new development of settlements

Performance record: learning portfolio consisting of 4 statement papers (1–2 pages each). After each of the three lecture blocks, a theses paper is to be prepared; the fourth paper covers synergies and interactions of the entire series. All four theses papers must be prepared individually and must be passed. Details on duration and tools are not specified.
