What it is about

You will learn the basics of thermal analysis and testing of spacecraft. You will create and compute thermal models (initially in Matlab, later in Thermal Desktop), carry out thermal-vacuum tests in the laboratory, and adjust models based on measured data. In the end, you will practically and computationally perform thermal development and qualification steps for spacecraft and components.

What you will be able to do

  • Create and compute thermal models with spaceflight-appropriate software
  • Plan and perform Thermal-Vacuum tests
  • Record experimental data and use it for model correlation
  • Document technical work in correct form

What the module consists of

  • Theorie (Kleingruppen)Delivery of the fundamentals of heat transfer and modeling
  • ComputersimulationCreation of example models in Matlab and detailed models in Thermal Desktop
  • Laborpraktikum (Thermal-Vacuum-Test)Preparation, supervision and evaluation of tests on demonstrator hardware

Teaching method

  • Kleingruppenunterrichtfor the conveyance and practice of theoretical content
  • Computersimulationfor building and calculating thermal models
  • Praktische Laborarbeitfor performing thermal-vacuum tests and data collection
  • Präsentationto assess communicative competence
