Thermodynamics II

What it is about

You will learn thermodynamic processes and phenomena that are decisive for aerospace systems (e.g., propulsion and rocket engines, compressors, turbines). In the end you will be able to analyze typical thermophysical properties, gas dynamics (including high-speed flows) and combustion processes and apply these insights to design and operation questions in aerospace engineering.

What you will be able to do

Knowledge of important aerospace devices and their thermodynamic processes
Analysis of thermophysical properties of substances (critical point, triple point, cavitation, flashing)
Understanding of gas dynamics of compressible and high-speed flows (Mach number, shock waves, nozzle flow)
Fundamentals of combustion: ignition, flame propagation, mixing, reaction kinetics and emissions
Assessment of complex thermophysical systems and identification of relevant phenomena

90-minute written examination with two parts: a block of comprehension questions (recall of relevant formulas, explain terms, sketch processes) and a block of calculation tasks (multistage computations with aerospace relevance). Examination closed-book; a calculator is allowed in the calculation block.
