AI-edited module sheet. Based on the TUMonline module description, edited for readability.Original in TUMonline

What it is about

You will learn to model, solve, and visualize thermofluid dynamic problems with OpenFOAM®. The course takes a practice-oriented (learning by doing) approach to installation, solver structure, adaptation and compilation of OpenFOAM® solvers, as well as post-processing with ParaView. In the end, you can independently handle various CFD cases (heat transfer, incompressible/compressible, turbulent, multiphase, combustion, dispersed flows).

What you will be able to do

  • solve various CFD problems with OpenFOAM®
  • visualize results with ParaView
  • understand the structure and construction of OpenFOAM® code
  • compile and adapt solvers and utilities
  • select an appropriate solver for a case
  • methodically construct CFD cases
  • critically evaluate simulation results
  • create own solvers and helper programs in OpenFOAM®

What the module consists of

  • VorlesungIntroduction to theory and concepts; each lecture is opened with a practical example
  • Übung/RechnerübungPractical implementation of lecture topics in OpenFOAM®; independent simulations
  • Projektarbeit in ZweiergruppenFinal project: simulation with report and presentation
  • wöchentliche Aufgaben/ReportShort reports on the weekly exercises as a performance assessment

Teaching method

  • theoretische Einführung (Präsentation)provides fundamentals and classification of the practical cases
  • Hands-on Rechnerübungen“learning by doing”: independent setup and solving of cases in OpenFOAM®
  • Teamworkshop und Präsentationscoaching (optional, ZSK)Support for teamwork and presentation techniques
