What it is about

In this module you will learn numerical, in particular finite-element-based methods for modeling and solving contact and interface problems in engineering practice. By the end you will be able to construct mathematically-mechanical models for various contact and interface cases, select appropriate numerical methods, and assess simple implementation aspects.

What you will be able to do

  • Define important fundamental concepts of computer-oriented contact and interfacial mechanics
  • Understand the interplay between model construction and numerical algorithms
  • Perform comparative analysis of common solution procedures
  • Make qualitative assessments as well as simple quantitative evaluations
  • Apply numerical methods purposefully and, to a limited extent, develop or transfer them further

What the module consists of

  • VorlesungConveying the theoretical foundations and modern implementation aspects
  • ÜbungDevelopment and solving of example problems, partly independently, partly jointly
  • RechnerübungenPractical application of the methods on computers (own notebooks or department's desktops)

Teaching method

  • Vortrag (mit Tablet-PC-Unterstützung)Important contents are written on the tablet so you can incorporate them into the handout
  • Selbstständige und gemeinsame ÜbungsbearbeitungConsolidation of lecture material through practical tasks
  • RechnerübungenPractice applying and implementing aspects of large engineering problems
