AI-edited module sheet. Based on the TUMonline module description, edited for readability.Original in TUMonline

What it is about

In this module you will learn to analyze, evaluate and manage the risks and reliability of technical systems. You will learn both probabilistic and decision-theoretic foundations (e.g., Bayesian networks, utility and decision theory) and methods for system reliability (e.g., fault tree/event tree analysis, time-dependent reliability, simulation-based methods). In the end you will be able to select appropriate models, model complex systems under uncertainty, and implement the results computationally.

What you will be able to do

  • Understanding of reliability, risk, utility and decision principles
  • Knowledge of traditional tools such as fault and event trees
  • Selection of appropriate system models for reliability assessment
  • Modeling of complex technical systems and decisions under uncertainty
  • Identification of key components and failure modes
  • Evaluation of risk acceptance criteria
  • Planning of risk management measures
  • Application of sampling- and simulation-based methods
  • Implementation of the methods in software (e.g., Matlab)

What the module consists of

  • VorlesungDelivery of the theoretical foundations in two parts: risk assessment and system reliability, each with application examples
  • ÜbungDeepening through exercises and case studies from civil, environmental, structural, mechanical and traffic engineering

Teaching method

  • Tafelvorlesung unterstützt durch FolienExplanation of the theory and derivation of key concepts
  • FallstudienIllustration and application of the methods to practical problems
  • Hausaufgaben/ÜbungsaufgabenIndependent practice of the content relevant to the lecture
  • Vorlesungsunterlagen (PDF)Provision of theory and examples for preparation
