AI-edited module sheet. Based on the TUMonline module description, edited for readability.Original in TUMonline

What it is about

You will learn how to develop advanced traffic control algorithms, integrate them into microscopic traffic simulators (e.g., SUMO), and systematically calibrate and validate simulations. In the end you will be able to integrate your own algorithms via programming interfaces, evaluate simulations, and visualize and interpret results in a proper, sachgerecht manner.

What you will be able to do

  • Integration of user-defined algorithms into traffic simulators (e.g., SUMO) through programming (e.g., Python)
  • Knowledge of the model components and functionalities of SUMO and their application
  • Development and implementation of advanced traffic control algorithms
  • Selection of appropriate calibration and validation procedures for given datasets and questions
  • Understanding the theory behind the main methods of calibration and validation (purpose, assumptions, limits)
  • Application of systematic calibration and validation methods
  • Evaluation, visualization, and interpretation of simulation results

What the module consists of

  • Seminar / LectureDelivery of the theoretical foundations for integration, calibration, and traffic control
  • Interactive teaching sessions / exercisesImplementation of what has been learned in practical modeling tasks and programming sessions
  • Project work (semester-long)Main assessment: practical application and implementation in a larger modeling project

Teaching method

  • Lecture presentationsDelivery of the theoretical content
  • Python programming sessionsPractical implementation and integration of algorithms into simulators
  • Discussions and exchanges with supervisorsSupport for the project work and deepened understanding
  • Provided software and datasetsEnable independent project work with realistic tasks
