What it is about

In this module you will learn the theory and practice of precise GNSS positioning and inertial navigation. You will deal with sensors (GNSS and inertial sensors), the underlying models, as well as strategies for integrating both systems and you will apply this knowledge practically, e.g. with Matlab and professional GNSS software.

What you will be able to do

  • Understand theory and fundamental methods of inertial navigation
  • Analyze and evaluate algorithms and procedures for inertial navigation
  • Develop your own algorithms for coupling inertial and satellite navigation
  • Assess the impact of different model options on position solutions
  • Derive analysis and optimization strategies for concrete use cases
  • Apply methods for determining the precision and accuracy of position solutions
  • Implement optimized processing strategies for precise GNSS evaluation

What the module consists of

  • Lecture with integrated exercises (3h)Conveying theory, demonstrations and Matlab examples
  • Exercise / Lab (2h)Practical work on tasks, Matlab implementations and work with Bernese GPS Software

Teaching method

  • PowerPoint presentations with electronic handoutsfor structured dissemination of content and examples
  • Board work / derivationsfor performing calculations and derivations
  • Matlab demonstrations and examplesto foster practical implementation and understanding
  • Group work in the lab with reports and short presentationsfor practical application, discussion of results and teamwork
  • Optional practice examto assess competence level for the first module part
