What it is about

You will learn how finite element methods are used for the simulation of fluid–structure interaction (FSI). The module covers the fundamentals of coupling fluid and structural mechanics, numerical discretization and solution strategies, and practical implementation with open-source software (Kratos Multiphysics). In the end you will be able to model FSI problems, solve them numerically, and evaluate various algorithmic or software-based approaches.

What you will be able to do

  • Understand fundamentals of FEM-based analysis of FSI
  • Apply the governing equations for flow, structure and coupling
  • Apply ALE description for moving meshes
  • Assess spatial and temporal discretization of FSI problems
  • Use numerical solution methods for structural and fluid equations
  • Recognize differences between embedded and body-fitted coupling approaches
  • Formulate discretized coupled problems and compare solution strategies
  • Apply fundamentals of high-performance computing for multiphysics
  • Practice use of Kratos Multiphysics for FSI simulation
  • Develop own practice examples as a project

What the module consists of

  • LectureConveying theoretical foundations and concepts
  • Seminar/Computer LabPresentation, discussion and execution of selected examples; supervision of the project work
  • Project workApplication and deepening in an interdisciplinary FSI project

Teaching method

  • Board, Overhead and PowerPoint presentationsFor the step-by-step transmission of theory and derivations
  • ManuscriptSupports the lecture content and as a reference
  • Computer Seminar (practical exercises)For implementation and discussion of case studies; preparation of the project work
  • Supervised project workApplication of what has been learned in interdisciplinary teams
