What it is about

You will learn how modern processor and memory architectures affect the design of data processing and storage systems and how to optimize software so that it runs noticeably faster on current machines. In the end you can optimize data-intensive algorithms and data structures for cache and memory levels, utilize parallelism and hardware accelerators, and analyze and eliminate performance bottlenecks.

What you will be able to do

  • Implement and accelerate data processing systems for modern hardware
  • Optimize algorithms and data structures for the memory hierarchy
  • Adapt programs and execution pipelines to hardware features (e.g. AVX, SGX)
  • Apply your own parallelization approaches to common data processing algorithms
  • Implement efficient synchronization of data structures
  • Assess the use of new hardware technologies (accelerators, fast networks, modern memory)
  • Evaluate software abstractions and programming models for data-intensive applications
  • Perform performance analysis, debugging and optimization in real-world data management systems
