What it is about

You learn methods and concepts to achieve security in communication and storage systems. The module covers classical and post-quantum cryptography, error-correcting codes and their application in distributed data storage, as well as Private Information Retrieval; in the end you will be able to understand, evaluate and practically apply these schemes.

What you will be able to do

  • Name and explain measures for security in modern communication and storage systems
  • understand and analyze fundamental cryptographic schemes
  • name challenges of Post-Quantum Cryptography
  • choose codes suitable for code-based cryptography, adjust parameters, evaluate and implement
  • understand and implement known attacks on code-based cryptography
  • give an overview of symmetric cryptography and authentication
  • explain the most important codes for distributed data storage
  • identify design challenges and parameter interactions in distributed data storage
  • identify security problems in distributed data storage
  • understand the principle and forms of Private Information Retrieval
  • provide an overview of complexity, capacity and codes in Private Information Retrieval

What the module consists of

  • LectureConveying the theoretical content, examples, discussions
  • Supporting exerciseApplication of lecture content through calculations and small implementation tasks

Teaching method

  • Lecture with slides and board workfor structured conveyance of the theoretical foundations
  • Discussion and interim questionsto activate participation and deepen understanding
  • Exercises and implementation tasksfor practical application and consolidation of the content
