IN2018Elective Modules Informatics6 ECTSEnglishsummer semesterDepartment Computer Science
AI-edited module sheet. Based on the TUMonline module description, edited for readability.Original in TUMonline

What it is about

You learn the fundamentals of augmented reality (AR): geometric transformations, projection geometry, representation of 3D information, display and tracking devices, as well as mathematical foundations of optical tracking, sensor fusion, and calibration. In the end you can describe, analyze and extend the mathematical and programming aspects of AR systems for your own solution approaches, and evaluate input/output devices for suitability to application scenarios.

What you will be able to do

  • Describe mathematical fundamentals of AR (e.g., homogeneous matrices, projective geometry)
  • Apply 3D representation and relevant APIs (e.g., OpenGL)
  • Understand functional principles and physical fundamentals of tracking devices
  • Explain optical tracking, sensor fusion and calibration procedures
  • classify AR concepts (e.g., difference to Mixed Reality, Ubiquitous Computing)
  • Assess suitability of input/output devices for concrete application scenarios
  • Programmatically understand, extend and apply small AR systems

What the module consists of

  • VorlesungConveying the technical foundations and concepts
  • ÜbungDiscussion of the weekly tasks and deepening the material
  • freiwilliges Teamprojekt (Final Project)Application and discussion of the learned concepts in a chosen application context; successful demonstration may yield a bonus

Teaching method

  • VorlesungPresentation of the theoretical foundations and relevant research
  • ÜbungReview of the weekly tasks for self-check and exam preparation
  • wöchentliche Aufgaben / EinzelarbeitDeepening of the material and self-assessment; serves as preparation for the exam
  • freiwilliges TeamprojektPractical application and deepening of the concepts; fosters transfer to practice and teamwork
