What it is about

You learn how programs in different languages are mapped to code for idealized (virtual) machines via translation schemes. In the end you will be able to generate machine commands for excerpts of programs and develop translation schemes for given language constructs.

What you will be able to do

  • Knowledge of virtual machines for imperative, functional, logical and object-oriented languages
  • Understanding of the principles for mapping language concepts to machine instructions
  • Ability to generate code in a virtual machine yourself
  • Ability to develop translation schemes for given language constructs

What the module consists of

  • Lectureintroduces translation schemes and illustrates them with small examples
  • Exercisedeepens understanding, practices applying the schemes and fosters development of new schemes

Teaching method

  • Slide or board presentationfor the introduction and presentation of translation schemes
  • Self-study exercisesto deepen understanding and practice application
  • Possibly online programming/animationsfor illustration and practical practice (if used)
