AI-edited module sheet. Based on the TUMonline module description, edited for readability.Original in TUMonline

What it is about

You will learn methods and analyses to improve the runtime efficiency of programs. The module covers data-flow analyses, fixed-point calculations and optimizing transformations, as well as hardware-near techniques such as register allocation, instruction selection and scheduling. In the end you will be able to apply analyses to small programs and develop optimizations.

What you will be able to do

  • Understanding data-flow analyses (e.g., availability of expressions, liveness)
  • Applying optimization transformations in compilers
  • Mastering the theory of complete lattices and monotone functions for fixed-point calculations
  • Applying and developing analyses (e.g., constant propagation, interval analysis)
  • Knowledge of interprocedural analyses and pointer analyses
  • Understanding fixed-point algorithms
  • Familiarity with hardware-specific optimizations (register allocation, instruction selection, Instruction Scheduling, cache usage)

What the module consists of

Teaching method

  • Folien- oder Tafelpräsentationzur Einführung und Erklärung der grundlegenden Techniken
  • Übungsaufgabenzur Vertiefung, Anwendung und zur Entwicklung eigener Analysen und Optimierungen
  • gegebenenfalls Online-Programmierung/Animationenzur Veranschaulichung und praktischen Übung (falls eingesetzt)
