What it is about

You learn concepts, structure and use of different Virtual Machines – from operating system and process virtualization through ISA- and high-level-language virtual machines to multicore and HW/SW co-design solutions. In the end you will be able to classify virtualization solutions, assess their pros and cons, and analyze technical design and performance trade-offs.

What you will be able to do

  • Classification of various Virtual Machine concepts
  • Assessment of concrete products and implementations
  • Analysis of the suitability of virtualization scenarios
  • Understanding design trade-offs and implementation challenges
  • Knowledge of typical performance optimizations

What the module consists of

  • LecturePresentation of content, discussions and tasks for teamwork
  • Exercises (online/offline)Investigation and extension of existing VM implementations; evaluation of techniques
  • optional presentationsvoluntary short talks by students on selected topics

Teaching method
