Mathematical Models in Biology

MA3601Elective Modules9 ECTSEnglishwinter semesterDepartment Mathematics
AI-edited module sheet. Based on the TUMonline module description, edited for readability.Original in TUMonline

What it is about

You learn how dynamic and stochastic models are constructed and applied in biology. The module covers, among other things, linear compartment models, Markov chains, birth–death and branching processes, as well as age- and space-structured populations. In the end you will be able to compare different modeling approaches and choose the appropriate model level for a biological system.

What you will be able to do

  • Comparison of deterministic and stochastic modeling approaches
  • Assessment of discrete vs. continuous models
  • Formulation of analytical, stochastic and discrete models for biological systems
  • Selection of an appropriate modeling level for a given system

What the module consists of

  • VorlesungPresentation of the content with examples and discussion for introduction and orientation
  • ÜbungDeepening through practice sheets and independent solution control

Teaching method

  • VorlesungTransmission of concepts, demonstration of examples, stimulus for independent literature work
  • ÜbungApplication and deepening of the lecture content through exercises and solutions
  • SelbststudiumIndependent review and working on the exercises
