AI-edited module sheet. Based on the TUMonline module description, edited for readability.Original in TUMonline

What it is about

You learn the fundamental conservation laws of continuum mechanics (mass, momentum, energy) as well as the mathematical methods with which these laws are formulated and applied. After the module you can apply these methods to specific models such as fluid dynamics, chemical/biological reactions, self-gravitation, or liquid crystals, and understand elasticity theory as well as distributions.

What you will be able to do

  • Mathematically formulate conservation laws (mass, momentum, energy)
  • Application of distributions in continuum mechanics
  • Understand the fundamentals of elasticity theory
  • Assess the objectivity of differential and constitutive equations
  • Apply the entropy principle and the free energy inequality
  • Get to know models such as Navier–Stokes, chemical/biological reactions, self-gravitation, liquid crystals

What the module consists of

  • LectureConveying theoretical content through lectures, examples and discussion
  • TutorialExercise sheets and solutions for self-check and deepening

Teaching method

  • LectureIntroduction of content, illustrative examples and discussion to motivate independent engagement
  • ExercisesExercise sheets and solutions to reinforce and test understanding
  • Board work/ProjectorVisualization and derivation of equations during the lecture
