AI-edited module sheet. Based on the TUMonline module description, edited for readability.Original in TUMonline

What it is about

You learn how to derive causal relationships from data in the climate and earth system, which methods exist for this purpose and what their limits are. In the end you will be able to compare different correlation- and causality-based approaches, assess their assumptions and apply methods to questions of the earth system.

What you will be able to do

  • Describe the basics of important methods for the analysis of spatio-temporal data
  • State linear and nonlinear methods for examining dependencies
  • Distinguish approaches of causal inference and reflect critically
  • Name the most important assumptions and limitations of the methods
  • Explain differences between data-driven investigation of spurious and causal relationships
  • Describe typical causality-related questions in the earth system and classify methodologically
  • Competences in scientific work: literature work, preparing and delivering presentations, writing scientific reports

What the module consists of
