AI-edited module sheet. Based on the TUMonline module description, edited for readability.Original in TUMonline

What it is about

You will learn how robotics is applied in surgery: from clinical use cases to technical fundamentals to the development of robot-assisted solutions for medical problems. In the end you will be able to assess deployment potentials, integrate robotics into surgical workflows, and design and present simple prototypes for defined clinical tasks.

What you will be able to do

  • Assessment of under which conditions robotics can provide decisive advantages
  • Integration of robotics into existing surgical workflows
  • Solid basic knowledge about the operation, design and specification of robotics systems
  • Conception and modeling of robotic solutions for identified medical problems
  • Definition and implementation of a clinical project with robotic objectives

What the module consists of

  • VorlesungIntroduction to clinical applications, comparison of conventional and robotic procedures; theory of robotics (kinematics, dynamics, mechanics, electronics, sensor technology, control, software infrastructure, safety, workflow, calibration/registration, user interface)
  • ProjektarbeitTeam projects (3–5 students) for idea generation, feasibility analysis, design of a project plan and implementation of a functional prototype; final presentation and written documentation (max. 15 pages)
  • Übungs-/HausaufgabenThree team-based tasks to deepen the material

Teaching method

  • VorlesungExplanation of clinical and technical fundamentals as well as analysis of current surgical techniques and trends
  • Kooperation mit KlinikabteilungPresentation of real clinical applications and practical relevance
  • Projektarbeit in TeamsApplication of what was learned through development and implementation of a prototype and fostering creative solutions
