Designing Manufacturing Systems

What it is about

You learn how decisions to design production systems are made and supported with quantitative methods. The focus is on layout types (e.g., job shops, flow lines, single-flow sequences), material flow planning, and the design of flexible assembly and production centers. In the end you will be able to distinguish suitable layout types, evaluate pros and cons, and mathematically model and practically apply planning approaches.

Provide an overview of methods for designing production systems
Differentiate important layout types (Job Shop, Flow Lines, Production Centers)
Analyze the advantages and disadvantages of layout types and make decisions for practical cases
Apply rough and exact planning approaches, including heuristics
Formulate and adapt mathematical models

Assessment

Written assignmentsWritten test

The assessment is 50% based on three assignments and 50% on a written test. Each assignment consists of 4–5 questions; in total the assignments are worth 90 points (30 points per assignment). The written test is also 90 points. Hinweise zu erlaubten Hilfsmitteln für den Test werden zu Beginn des Semesters bekannt gegeben.
